A quiet Saturday morning at the First Residential College (ASTAR) was awoken by upbeat songs in full blast last February. It was the Zumba session of Densoc’s now upgraded Interbatch Sports, it is now rebranded as Dental Sports Day or DSD. DSD takes a different approach altogether as it involves the Faculty as a whole; students, lecturers and supporting staff. It was a mammoth event with a variety of different sports. Competitions were held for ping-pong, futsal, basketball, volleyball, dodgeball and tug-of-war. The event is structured that each department of our faculty was assigned a batch. Thus, each group of lecturers and students vied for points that would bring their group to glory! The first-years were matched with the Oral Craniofacial Sciences Department; second-years, Restorative; third-years, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery; fourth-year, Community Dentistry and lastly, the Orthodontics and Paediatrics Department were paired with the final-year students. Each group had their own chants and used it generously to cheer their peers and favourite lecturers on! The day started with a light breakfast served by the committee members and a short officiation by our beloved Dean, Dato’ Professor Dr Zainal Ariff Bin Abdul Rahman. Straight after that was the Zumba session lead by the ever energetic second-year students who were the brains behind this event. Everyone seemed to enjoy the Zumba session which came after breakfast and got them really hyped up for the upcoming sporting events. After a short briefing by Ms. Chee Win Lee, the Director of DSD 2017/2018, the participants were lead to ASTAR’s court. At around 9:30am, whistles were blown and the games began. Futsal, volleyball and 3-on-3 basketball were played concurrently. Who knew many of our students are superb athletes too? By the way, it wasn’t just students, our lecturers mucked in and played as well! Amongst the lecturers seen was Dr Jacob, the prized goalkeeper of his team; Dr Chew, who joined her students for a game of basketball and Dr Eshamsul who played volleyball. It was quite a sight to see many of our faculty members casually playing and interacting with one another. Some of the games were very close, often coming to heart-stopping results and twists of fortune! The games concluded by lunchtime and the participants retreated to the cool Dewan Tun Perak of ASTAR for lunch. As soon as lunch was settled, the scheduled ping-pong competition was held and again, led to some very tense matches. By 4pm, all the results have been returned to the committee pending the final competition that everyone has been waiting for… The last event for the day was tug-of-war. This event saw many of the lecturers and staff lending a hand to ensure victory for their side. Everyone put their backs into the game and it was amazing and amusing to boot! The overall result of Dental Sports Day was calculated as soon tug-of-war concluded. The champion for this year’s DSD went to the final-year students and the Orthodontics and Paediatrics Department! The prizegiving ceremony was done at Dewan Tun Perak and the prizes were given out by Dato’ Prof Dr Aziz as well as the Advisor of DSD, Dr Angela Gonzalez, accompanied by Ms. Chee Win Lee, the Director of DSD. It was a well-received event and holds a lot of potential for the years to come.
