The Faculty of Dentistry Mentorship Programme (FDMP) is organised annually to allow dental students a chance to visit dental clinics. This programme is vital in exposing dental students to the work of professional dentists and giving them the chance to learn and benefit from this wonderful and rare opportunity.
This year, FDMP was held for 2 days on the 19th and 20th of December 2016. The clinic that I went to was Yap and Associates Dental Surgery which was located in Damansara Heights. Dr. Yap is an NUS graduate and a highly skilled dentist. Throughout the two days in which I was attached to his clinic, Dr. Yap never stopped lecturing and providing us valuable insights into the dental profession. He truly devotes his efforts in making sure that we learnt all that we could from our time at his clinic.
Besides that, we also had the chance to observe different methods and equipment at his clinic compared to those in our faculty. Amongst the various procedures we observed were the polishing of teeth using air blow instead of using a brush and prophylaxis paste. This method was much quicker and easier to carry out. We also witnessed various other procedures such as inlay preparation, root canal treatment and so on.
Dr. Yap is a very friendly dentist and is very caring towards his patients, most of whom have visited his clinic for many years now. One of the most important qualities of dentists that he stressed upon us is to place the patient’s welfare above all other priorities and to practice in an ethical manner.
Through FDMP, I was given a glimpse into the private practice and placed under a great mentor. This programme is definitely a truly beneficial experience and I believe that every dental student should join it at least once.
