9th National Dental Student Scientific Conference
It was late Friday night when the 8 of us, final year Dental Students, arrived by train at Butterworth, Penang. Tomorrow, we would be representing University Malaya at an event that would bring together dental students all across Malaysia to compete in various events over the course of 2 days. We didn’t know what to expect but there was a feeling of nervousness, excitement and thrill, thinking of what the conference would bring, as we settled in for the night.
Early the next morning, we arrived at The Light Hotel, the event venue; And already, there were many students registering and getting ready for their events later that day. 4 of us took part in the Poster Competition and the other 4 in the Oral Competition. Over 400 participants gradually filled the main hall for the opening ceremony. The organizing committee, Penang International Dental College(PIDC) did a wonderful job making the ceremony run smoothly. One of the keynote speakers was our very own, Dato' Prof. Dr. Ishak Bin Abdul Razak, whom, after the opening ceremony, delivered a lecture on “The Future Direction of Dental Practice in Malaysia”.
As the day’s event got underway, the 8 of us prepared for our events ahead. The poster competition was judged by 3 lecturers from different universities, and the 23 participating teams had 5 minutes each to present their poster followed by a Q&A session. Similarly, the oral presenters had 5 minutes to present their work followed by a Q&A session. There were also other events that our university didn’t take part in — wire bending and soap carving competition, table clinic, creative calligraphy, short video & photography contest, dental quiz. All too soon, the events were over and we could finally breathe again with our presentations done and delivered. It was time now to get ready for a night of fun at the Gala Night!
During the Gala night, all the participants were mixed up to allow us to mingle around and get to know the students from all the other universities. The event was really fun as the talent show was held that night. No long speeches and draggy ceremonies, the event started promptly, and the talent show feature dancing, singing, drama and creative performances, all done by dental students from the different dental colleges.
The results announcement was on the following day; To our pride and joy, University Malaya managed to bag the 1st and 3rd prizes for the poster competition. Just goes to show that we can compete at presenting just as well as the other dental colleges out there. All in all, a very short and sweet event, where we made new friends, exchanged valuable ideas, and had a good time. Hopefully, we will send a larger delegation to the event held next year at MAHSA University and
