Oral Health Education (OHE) 2014
6th December 2014
On 6th December 2014, Oral Health Education was held at Kolej Kediaman Tunku Abdul Rahman (ASTAR), Universiti Malaya. Oral Health Education is an annual project conducted by the Islamic Dental Students Society of Faculty of Dentistry (PPIPUM) in hopes to educate and inspire people to consider oral health as an important component when defining a general well being of a person. Last year, it was held at Kolej Matrikulasi Kedah to give free screening to students as well as to give students some exposure to the field of dentistry.
The event started at 8.30am and lasted throughout the day, finally ending at 5.00pm. This event was organized by PPIPUM in collaboration with the Dental Society of Universiti Malaya (DENSOC). The event was carried out by third year dental students. The objective for OHE 2014 was to highlight the dental services which are available to UM students, so that they would be aware of their privileges with respect to oral health care.
The activities carried out throughout the day were free dental check up, free oral health consultation, exhibition booth and sales booth. Every single person who came also got a treat of door gifts that included free toothpaste, interdental brushes, and brochures from the sponsors: Tepe, Dentiste, and Mu’min.
The event ran smoothly and many of the participants gave positive feedback, much to the delight of the organizing team. Some mentioned that they became more knowledgeable about the preventive methods to combat oral diseases whilst others walked away more conscious about considering the sugar content in their foods as well as becoming more aware of the importance of having good oral hygiene.
It is safe to say that the committee did a wonderful job in conducting the event. However, as with all things, there is still much room for improvement and we believe that the coming committee members can definitely do a better job to take this event to an even higher level.
