Balai Ungku Aziz was abuzz with excitement and thrills on the 27th of October last year. Our second-year dental students hosted the annual Seniors Freshies and Staffs’ Night or commonly referred to as SFS. This years’ SFS was given the theme ‘Dentavengers’, a theme coming from Marvel’s ‘Avengers’ universe which was injected with a dental twist to it. The event commenced around 8 o’clock starting with speeches from this year’s Director, Ms. Jasmin Fadhilah Japri and Mr. Teoh Yeong Chee, The President of Densoc. Ms. Jasmin wished thanks to her colleagues for helping her with organising the event and Mr. Yeong Chee stated how he always appreciates events like SFS which strengthens bonds between staffs, seniors & beloved juniors. The Dean, Dato’ Professor Dr Zainal Ariff Bin Abdul Rahman also went to gave a brief speech that reiterated Mr. Yeong Chee’s views. He also congratulated and was impressed with the efforts laid out by Ms. Jasmin and her team. As soon as the Dean returned to his seat, a small play was presented. It encompassed of naughty bacteria roaming around the stage ever so mischievously, stealing foam letters & props that have been placed on stage. Then, the audience had quite a shock when the “Dentavengers” – the dental version of their favourite characters – popped out of nowhere to save the night! Our heroes thankfully managed to retrieve the stolen letters & invited the Dean to place them back where they belong. Thus, the event was officiated, how clever! The audience was surely entertained by two performances presented by our newly inducted first-year students. They put up a show of an acapella rendition of pop songs which showed to us that many of them had a great voice. Amongst the songs sung was “Numb”, “Stay with Me”, “Airplanes” and it was culminated with the trending and catchy “Dusk Till Dawn” by Zayn Malik. It was a job very well done, their training paid off; kudos to them and their seniors who coached them for almost two weeks! The second performance was in the form of a dance-off which left the audience spellbound. It was a display of well-choreographed dancing and exposed some latent talent within some of our juniors. The beat they danced to weren’t the easiest of songs, it was mesmerising for the audience to watch although it took them a lot of their time to get it down to a T! They still managed to pull it off and the audience were left satisfied with their routine. Never underestimate the artistic tendencies of dental students, dear lecturers… In between performances, games were played which were “Doctor Says” and “Matematik Koyak”. Dr Firdaus and Dr Shan sporting went up on stage to play together with their students. What most didn’t expect was probably the surprise appearance of Dr Angela who came up on stage to belt out one of her favourite songs, “Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang”. Her performance was met by a thunderous applause from the audience who cheered her on. The event was later dismissed and guests were served supper in the examination hall. All in all, it was a highly successful event which managed to gather lots of the academic staff, seniors and juniors under one roof for one night. A night where all their problems were left behind in their respective clinics and labs and all they did was enjoy themselves, chatting and eating merrily as members of UM’s dental faculty. Once again, a special thanks to the Dean, Dato’ Professor Dr Zainal Ariff Bin Abdul Rahman and the Faculty for supporting this years’ SFS Night and also many thanks to Dr Noor Azlin Yahya, the Advisor of SFS 2017/2018. Congratulations once again to the Director of SFS, Ms. Jasmin Fadhilah Japri and her team of second-years!
