30th October 2014
On 30 October 2014, Senior-Freshies & Staffs Night, which is well known as ‘SFS Night’ was successfully organized by the 2nd year students of session 2014/2015. This event is one of the annual DENSOC activites. This event successfully took place at Balai Ungku Aziz, Faculty of Dentistry Universiti Malaya. “sCarious Night” was been chosen as the theme of the night in an attempt to mirror the condition of the oral cavity if it is not properly taken care of, and also the tendency of caries formation at night due to lower salivary flow rate. The theme was also such because the event day coincided with Halloween.
This event involved all the students, lecturers and staffs of the Faculty of Dentistry. One of the main reasons for the event was to officially welcome the 1st year students to the Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Malaya. Besides, this event was organized to introduce the lecturers and staffs to the 1st year students.
About 294 guests including lecturers, staffs and students came to this event. They were given a goodies bag each upon registration. The event started at 7.30 p.m. with the arrival of students, staffs and VIPs followed by the singing of the national anthem, Negaraku & University of Malaya song and also a solemn prayer recitation. Then, the event continued with the speech given by the director of SFS Night, Mr. Teoh Yeong Chee. At 8.15 p.m., the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, YBhg. Prof Dato’ Dr Zainal Ariff bin Abdul Rahman gave his speech before officiating the event. The Dean had to pop a balloon after choosing from a few dental hand instruments which was brought up on stage by a 2nd year student dressed in his lab coat, mask and cap. It was a rather amusing sight, which got everyone very delighted!
After that, the guests were entertained with the short multimedia clip prepared by technical bureau of SFS Night 2014/2015. The 1st year students also show cased their hidden talents in the arts by presenting an array of interesting and enjoyable performances such as a self choreographed zombie themed flash-mob, a catchy Indian traditional dance performance as well as some melodious and harmonious singing in all 3 main languages. An action packed martial arts performance and also a short but meaningful drama was performed all by our very own 1st years. Their performances were very impressive indeed! Besides that, there were also lucky draws and games being prepared to ensure the guests thoroughly enjoyed the night. There was never a dull moment throughout the event!

While the guests were enjoying the food, the Dean on the vocals and electric guitar with his band comprising of one of the respected staff from the oral surgery department on the bass, oral surgeons Dr. Faiz Khaleed on the drums and Dr. Firdaus Hariri also on the guitar, stole everyone’s attention by performing an old school track by Guns N Roses. 2nd year songbird Violette Ong Xinhui closed the night with a chill and relaxing tune “Dan Sebenarnya” by Yuna, accompanied by final year students Edward Tay and Ngin Wei Chun on the acoustic guitars.
Everyone was busy taking pictures and making memories throughout the night. This was definitely a night to remember and hopefully it will continue to be even better in the coming years.
